Describe the existing downstand beam first
A visible downstand beam is not merely an inconvenient edge on the ceiling. Before new drywall casing is planned, its material, condition and existing coverings must be clarified. This guide concerns coordination of a casing, not removal, shortening or alteration of the structural member.
HandMen refers enquiries from Wiesbaden and the Rhine-Main region to independent contractors. Room photographs, existing drawings and a clear identification of the beam help with an initial enquiry. Unknown information remains open; a photograph proves neither load capacity nor the construction hidden beneath an existing finish.
Separate appearance from protective function
Is the aim only to change the room appearance, or must the casing provide a specified protective function? Answer this before ordering materials. A visually closed white box does not establish fire resistance.
Knauf lists dedicated Fireboard casing systems for steel beams. Rigips refers structural casings to the applicable system evidence. This does not approve your beam: the designer and contractor must establish project requirements and a suitable verified construction.
Agree the finished geometry in the room
Show the length, width and underside of the proposed finished casing on one drawing. Distinguish provisional dimensions from the confirmed survey. Include side junctions and ends meeting walls or other components.
Check the relationship with doors, tall cupboards, curtains and lights. The visible finished shape takes space; the existing beam depth alone does not describe the future passage. Have differing levels and uneven existing surfaces recorded in the survey rather than omitted from the desired image.
| Item | Available or unresolved |
|---|---|
| Member | Material and identifier |
| Records | Drawing revision and available evidence |
| Surface | Existing casing and visible damage |
| Geometry | Existing and desired finished outline |
| Surroundings | Doors, furniture and service routes |
| Requirement | Protective function clarified by responsible specialists |
Do not infer fixings and junctions from a picture
The contractor must coordinate the proposed support system and its fixings with the actual existing construction. A straight box in a photograph says nothing about permissible fixing locations. Do not propose drilling an unknown structural member merely to make the design fit.
Junctions with the ceiling and walls also need an agreed detail. Ask who assesses movement, existing joints and different substrates. Do not borrow board thicknesses or screw spacings from another job; this article is not an installation guide.
Clarify services and future use before closure
Mark known cables, pipes and accessible components on the drawings. Suspected service routes remain unresolved until assessed by the responsible specialists. Casing is not a reason to move or enclose existing installations without proper assessment.
If a light, curtain track or another load will later be fixed here, disclose it beforehand. The finished casing is not automatically a suitable fixing substrate. Required maintenance access and openings must be compatible with the chosen construction and any protective requirements.
Agree a check before the work is concealed
Agree which documents and visible conditions will be recorded before the construction is hidden. Name the people responsible for technical assessment and execution; a collection of site photographs does not replace required evidence.
A useful interim record includes the confirmed option, deviations and the decision addressing them. If approval is missing or a junction differs from the drawing, resolve the affected step before the area becomes inaccessible. This coordination list does not approve an unknown building.
| Question | Record |
|---|---|
| Option confirmed? | Drawing and responsible person |
| Fixings resolved? | Existing construction and confirmed detail |
| Junctions agreed? | Ceiling, walls and existing joints |
| Access considered? | Openings and future maintenance |
| Deviations resolved? | Decision and affected area |
| Records complete? | Agreed evidence and photographs |
Describe finishing and handover separately
Describe the intended visible surface, lighting conditions and subsequent coating as a separate scope. Checking appearance is different from checking the concealed construction. General painting work is not offered here as an unrestricted activity.
At handover, keep the completed scope, agreed documents and open points together. Retain information about concealed junctions and permitted later fixings. Any subsequent change to the casing requires a fresh assessment of its effects.
Send an enquiry with clear boundaries
Send the location, photographs, existing records and desired finished outline. Identify open questions and intended later fixings. Ask for investigation, design, casing and finishing to be described separately in the offer.
HandMen carries out no building work and gives no technical approval. Before personal contact details are shared, the specific independent partner is named and your separate consent obtained. You agree assessment, design, offer, contract, execution, invoice and payment directly with the selected contractor. HandMen remains responsible for its own referral activities.
